1.1 SCOPEThis specification describes the type of gray iron used in the manufacturing of Performer scrolls. This cast ironmaterial conforms to standard ASTM A48-94a or NF EN 1561, although its mechanical characteristics areintermediary.
1.2This specification applies to all Danfoss-Maneurop Performer scrolls.
The maximum temperature taken into account in this spécification is 450°F (230°C).

4.1GLOSSARYREQUIREMENTSThe mechanical characteristics of the cast iron should allow a proper resistance of the parts under operatingconditons encountered during qualification testing and proper machining properties that comply with Danfoss-Maneurop’s manufacturing equipment and process.
4.2In order to avoid any compatibility problem with refrigerant and oil, the use of any rust protection or gray ironcoating should not be done without the written agreement of Danfoss Maneurop.
4.3The mechanical strength of the involutes of the Performer scrolls is directly linked to the mechanical strengthof the gray iron and to the size of the graphite lamellas where the machined involute is attached to the scroll Confidential: Property of Danfoss Commercial Compressors, Trevoux, France. base plate. The chart below gives the mechanical properties and the graphite sizes according to theapplication of the scrolls (refrigerant, air conditionning, refrigeration, other). The graphite contained into thecast iron must always be shape « I », no graphite accumulation is allowed. The evaluation of the graphite sizeis done by the use of ISO 945-1994 standard.
The conformity of the wrap mechanical strength to the specification will be checked by picking some test barsup, as indicated in the attached annex (location between the beginning of the spiral and the beginning plus 3PI radian), however the supplier could suggest an alternate control plan of the production, it must be agreedon by Maneurop.
Looking at one or more sections of involute at a location identical to the one used on the test bar will check theconformity of the graphite size. As an alternative, it could be possible to check the graphite size on the brokentest bar.
The part microstructure is 95% perlitic in the involute, nevertheless ferrite is allowed at a depth of over 2 mmall around the involute. Traces of carbides are
allowed (steadite and cementite) as long as the machinability isnot affected.
A homogenous hardness in the involute and in the oldham coupling bumps is required, the variation betweenthe hardest and the softest points should be equal to 30 HB as a maximum. The part will be grinded beforethe hardness measurement in order to eliminate a potential ferritic layer and in order to improve the ball pointreading.
