A large powerful autumn snowstorm slowly moved out of Colorado on Thursday and moved toward Nebraska and Kansas, causing terrible conditions on the eastern plains.Hundreds of flights were cancelled (取消) because of the snowstorm.

The snow dropped more than 3 feet in areas of the foothills west of Denver and closed schools and businesses.Roads across the region remained full of snow and icy.

“Big storms like these seem to come to America around every 10 to 12 years,” said Kyle Fredin,a National Weather Service meteorologist

The storm also spread a blanket of white from northern Utah’s Wasatch Front to western Nebraska’s northern border with South Dakota.Denver-based Frontier Airlines said it cancelled 19

flights in and out of Denver, and some flights were delayed by up to four hours at Denver International Airport.United Airlines,a carrier at the Denver airport with about 400 flights per day, cancelled about half of its flights. The area around the airport received between 11 and 16 inches of snow, the weather service said.Airport spokesman Chuck Cannon said crews were using 174 pieces of snow-removal equipment to keep runways and taxiways clear as they dealt with

severe (猛烈的) wind gusts.

“Our biggest problem area now is the eastern plains of Colorado,”said CDOT spokesman Bob Wilson.“One of the biggest conditions we are dealing with is the wind because it makes us unable to see.”He said snowplows (扫雪机) had been removing snow.“But the wind is blowing so badly that it will basically just blow more snow onto the roadway,” he added.

Wilson said no serious accidents had been reported, likely because shuttered businesses meant fewer cars on the road.

Whiteout conditions were forecast on Thursday for the plains of Wyoming and western Nebraska, where 12 inches of snow were reported in Rushville and 11 inches nearby Clinton.Three-foot drifts were reported elsewhere in western Nebraska.

D.Crews have no idea how to deal with the snow around the airport. 59.What does the underlined word in the last but one paragraph mean? A.Developed. B.Closed. C.Balanced. D.Protected.

In many countries in the world, the old are the most important people in the lives of their children and grandchildren. There are different ways that people show respect to the old.

Albert Yeboah from Ghana said,“One can’t wear a hat to greet an older person. That is very impolite.” He also said,“If you see an old person with a load, you have to help him or you are in_deep_waters.”

In many Asian countries the children have a formal relationship with older people, including their parents. For example,it is not common for an old person to ask a young person for advice.

However,in Latin families, parents and children often have a more informal relationship and it is common for parents to ask their children for help.“My parents always take me with them to their office to help them with the English language.”said Karla from Bolivia. But even though she and her parents would talk freely about things, she said,“I never talk back when my parents talk to me,whether good or bad.”

In the United States, there are wide differences about the way the old are treated by younger people.Eurykah from Cameroon had noticed that young people often talk impolitely to older people.

Stein Henderson, who works at the Career Center, believes that there are differences in each family.

When we see well,we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.

People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes, everything

else seems blurry (=unclear). Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become nearsighted.

People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光).This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障).Long ago these people often became blind. Now,however,it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.

Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度).To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye;then look at the

same object out of your other eye.You will find the object’s relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is.People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.

64.We should take good care of our eyes________. A.only when we can see well

B.only when we cannot see perfectly C.even if we can see well

D.only when we realize how important our eyes are

65.When things far away seem indistinct (模糊不清),one is probably________. A.near-sighted

66.The underlined word “suffer” in the third paragraph probably means________. A.experience B.imagine C.feel pain D.are affected with

67.Having two eyes instead of one is particularly useful for________. A.seeing at night

B.seeing objects far away C.looking over a wide area D.judging distances

D

Violent gangs.Bar fights.Broken Bones. No,we aren’t talking about a late night in Downtown,Chico,we’re talking about the things that come to many people’s minds when the word, motorcycles,is mentioned.

Many Chico State students have learned of the convenience of small motorcycles and scooters when it comes to parking on or near campus.Motorcycle parking is something that is available when compared to the amount of vacant automotive parking—something especially valuable when running a bike late for class.Motorcycle-riding students have also learned to

appreciate the 50 to 80 average mpg, especially today when it seems as if gasoline prices are shooting up faster and more often than a back alley junkie.

Still, some people are reluctant to ride the steel horse.Marc Lewis,a 24-year-old Chico State anthropology student,is one of those people.“I’ve had motorcycles in the past.I know what they’re about.I want another one,for entertainment purposes,”Lewis said. The only things holding Lewis back are insurance costs and what he refers to as “unsafe drivers”.Safety and insurance costs certainly are important factors.

Chris Kelley,employee of Cost-U-Less Insurance Center at 166 Cohasset Road,Suite 3,

admits that motorcycle insurance can get pricey. The average price per month for Chico State, students in their 20s is about $100,Kelley said.“The most expensive rate I’ve ever quoted was something like $32,000 a year,”Kelley said.“The guy had a horrible record.”

If a motorcycle is something that you’ve always been curious about but have been frightened by the dangerous image it is often given, try rethinking your position.Motorcycling is one of the most diverse activities in existence.Consider their formation, you find here a brief introduction to several of the more popular aspects of motorcycle riding.

68.The passage is about________. A.students’ motorcycle parking B.motorcycles’ insurance costs C.students’ riding motorcycles D.motorcycles’ convenience

69.When it comes to motorcycles,we tend to think of________. A.a late night in Downtown,Chico

B.the convenience of small motorcycles and scooters C.safety and insurance costs are increasingly high D.many motorcyclists give people a horrible image

70.Which of the following is NOT true according to the second paragraph? A.It is very convenient for students to ride motorcycles.

B.There are enough parking places available on or near campus. C.Students are often late for class while riding bikes. D.More and more students will buy motorcycles.

The flying fox is not a fox at all.It is an extra large bat that has got a fox’s head, and that feeds on fruit instead of insects.Like all bats, flying foxes hang themselves by their toes when at rest and travel in great crowds when flying out.A group will live in one place for years.Sometimes several hundred of them take up a single tree.As they return to the tree towards sunrise, they quarrel among themselves and fight for the best places until long after daylight.Flying foxes have babies once a year, giving birth to only one at a time.At first, the mother has to carry the baby on her breast wherever she goes.Later, she leaves it hanging up,and brings back food for it to eat.Sometimes a baby bat falls down to the ground and cries for help. Then the older ones fly down and try to pick it up.If they fail to do so,it will die.Often hundreds of dead baby bats can be found

on the ground at the foot of a tree.

dress as... point at...

50.B [while和when都意为“当……
